Dress Code

Msgr. Scanlan High School, a private Catholic secondary school, offers an academic program of studies and in keeping with its definition and character maintains a formal dress code for its students. Msgr. Scanlan High School believes that the implementation of a formal dress code contributes to a seriousness of purpose and a positive learning atmosphere.

The school dress code is designed to help create a better self-image on the part of students and to foster their self-worth and self-esteem. The clearly defined dress code is expected to foster self-discipline and to better prepare students for the demands of the work world they will enter in the not too distant future. Uniforms must fit and be worn properly.

Students are to be in compliance with the dress code from the beginning of the school day until its conclusion, as well as during travel to and from school.

THE OFFICIAL DRESS CODE OF THE SCHOOL FOR YOUNG MEN REQUIRES THEY WEAR:

Uniform pants (black, navy, beige, or gray)
White Short Sleeve Button-down Collar Shirt (must be worn with a tie)
White Long Sleeve Button-down Collar Shirt (must be worn with a tie)
Both shirts must be properly sized and tucked in at all times with a belt.

Heather Grey V-Neck Pullover Sweater w/Logo
Navy V-Neck Sweater Vest w/Logo
A Msgr. Scanlan Polo Shirt is optional throughout the school year (must have school logo from Flynn & O’Hara)
HAIRCUT AND FACIAL HAIR - Students are encouraged to be individuals and express themselves, however, this occurs within boundaries to be adhered to by all students while enrolled at Msgr. Scanlan H.S. Students may not be permitted to attend school with extremes in style or color deemed inappropriate by the administration. Students are to maintain a neatly groomed appearance including facial hair.
Boys’ earrings may not be worn in school. Nose rings/studs on the face or tongue are not permitted.
Excessive and/or expensive jewelry such as rings, chains, etc. is not permitted.
Tattoos are not encouraged, but if a student has one, it must be covered at all times.
Navy with white stripes and trim heavyweight V-neck cardigan sweater (Grade 12 only).
ALL SHOES must be BLACK or BROWN, closed toe and have a back. All black sneakers are permitted on uniform days. Approved footwear Includes leather, pleather, patent leather, nubuck, suede shoes or boots. Crocs, Ugg slippers or slippers of any kind are not permitted on uniform days.

THE OFFICIAL DRESS CODE OF THE SCHOOL FOR YOUNG WOMEN REQUIRES THEY WEAR:

Uniform Slacks (black, navy blue, beige or gray). Uniform pants may not be altered.
White Short Sleeve Button-down Collar Shirt
White Long Sleeve Button-down Collar Shirt.
Navy V-Neck Pullover Sweater w/Logo.
Powder Blue V-Neck Pullover Sweater/Logo.
White Opaque Nylon Knee-Highs.
Stockings, tights or knee-highs worn with skirts or socks with pants must be Black, Navy Blue, Beige, Gray or White without designs or patterns.
Grey and Blue Plaid Wrap Around Kilt.

Excessive and/or expensive jewelry is not permitted.
Girls may not wear dangling earrings or hoop earrings of any kind. They may wear one small earring in each ear. Nose studs are permitted. No name earrings are permitted.
Tattoos are not encouraged, but if a student has one, it must be covered at all times.

Navy Heavyweight Hooded Sweatshirt w/Silk Screen.

Interpretation of the above items concerning grooming and fashion will be made by the Administration only.

Any violations of these regulations will result in detention and/or suspension. In those cases where there is a noticeable absence of any cooperative spirit, parents/guardians will be notified, and suspension will be considered.

Specific directives relating to dress codes are mailed to the parents/guardians during the summer months. These directives are discussed with students at

the beginning of the school year.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE DRESS CODE IS IN EFFECT:

Throughout the school building for the entire day, and on all exam days, students may not be permitted to sit for any examinations if they are not dressed according to the school’s dress code standards.

No excuses will be accepted for inappropriate attire. All improperly dressed students will be scheduled for community services or detention and contact will be made home.
