WHY SHOULD PARENTS SEND THEIR CHILDREN TO MSGR. SCANLAN HIGH SCHOOL?
It is not easy for parents to decide where their children will go for their high school education. There are so many factors to consider in choosing a high school —how much it will cost, how far it is from home, and most importantly what it will offer the child as he or she prepares for college. Here are some things for parents to think about:

1. We strongly encourage parents to send their sons and daughters to a Catholic high school. All Catholic high schools provide students with a Christian frame of reference, a realization that we are all God’s children and that He has given us our talents and abilities to use for His glory and the service of others. Msgr. Scanlan High School is proud to be a Catholic school. We welcome students of many faiths as we share common values. If you send your child to us, we will try our best, with your help, to keep those values alive in his or her heart.

2. Catholic High Schools in New York have a proud tradition of academic excellence. 98% are accepted to and attend college. Msgr. Scanlan High School is proud of our academic success. Last June over 60% of our graduating class received scholarships totaling over $7 million. We are proud of our exceptional students who have gone on to such prestigious colleges as New York University, Columbia, Cornell, and many others. We are also proud of our students who have done so well in SUNY and CUNY colleges. Not every student is the same. We take college counseling seriously and try to help our students select the college that best fits them.

3. In line with this, we are inaugurating a special FOUR-YEAR SAT PREPARATION PROGRAM. The SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) is the way of entry to most colleges. Most schools concentrate on SAT preparation in Senior Year. We are instituting an online course beginning next year in Freshman Year to begin college preparation at an earlier stage. We believe this will accomplish two purposes: (1) it will help students prepare for the SAT over a four-year period and (2) it will help students to focus on college as their goal. We welcome your inquiries about this exciting new program which will begin in September 2012.

4. Msgr. Scanlan High School takes seriously our responsibility to help each student both in and outside of class. There are extensive tutoring possibilities, both before class in the morning and in the afternoon. All of this extra help is offered by our teachers free of charge. It shows that our teachers take a personal interest in seeing each student succeed. We think this is what makes Msgr. Scanlan High School special.

5. Again we recognize that each student is at a different level of achievement. Most students are in the Regents Preparation level, preparing for the required New York State Regents exams. Many of our students are on the Honors level and many participate in Advanced Placement courses which provide college credit during high school (and obviously save their parents tuition money in college). On the other hands, many of our students are in the SATELLITE PROGRAM which has had unique success over the past six years. In the Satellite Program, incoming students who need extra help in Reading and Math are provided with two periods of each during the regular school day, with a faculty member monitoring their progress. This has helped these students to achieve and to move on even to the Honors level. Again we welcome your inquiries about the Satellite Program and the other academic levels.

6. Msgr. Scanlan High School is uniquely situated in a safe environment. Our school is situated in a predominantly industrial area, with Home Depot being our next-door neighbor. If you are worried about sending your child to a congested area, be assured this is not the case with our school.

7. We are proud of our facilities. People have said that our facilities are like those of a college campus. Classes are held in two main buildings, Dominican Hall and St. Helena Hall. We have two regulation-size gymnasia. Through the generous help of an alumnus, we have a beautiful baseball field and softball field. We welcome you to tour our campus. Just call our Recruitment Office at (718) 430-0100 ext. 20 to set up an appointment for a family tour.

8. Our school emphasizes academic achievement. Beyond that, we have a wide rage of extra-curricular activities, including Varsity and JV sports, Health and Wellness Club, Choir, “Knitting for Others,” SPIN (peer tutoring), National Honors Society, special Honors Societies in English, Spanish, Math and Science, and many others. We encourage our students to be well-rounded and to become involved in these activities. Take a look at our website for the full range of after-school activities: www.scanlanhs.edu.

9. Msgr. Scanlan High School stands for service. Other schools have service as an extra; we make service the center of who are what we are. All of our students are involved in service projects, assisting needy children, promoting the Right to Life, and particularly helping the devastated people of Haiti. “Spirit Haiti” is our school-wide project, involving all our students, to conduct various fund-raising activities to help build an orphanage in Haiti. This is “Christianity in action” and this is “Scanlan in action” too.

10. Finally, Msgr. Scanlan High School tries to keep costs reasonable. We understand the difficult economic times we are living in. We try to keep our tuition affordable. Our students can apply for various tuition-assistance programs sponsored by the Archdiocese of New York and others. Information about this is available from our Financial Office.

These are ten reasons why parents should consider sending their children to our school. We welcome your comments.
We invite you to have your child “Spend a Day” at Scanlan. Just call our Recruitment Office to arrange for this.

We believe that Scanlan is a great school where your child can grow as a student and even more as a person.
We hope to see your child with us in September!
