Dress Code Msgr. Scanlan High School, a private Catholic secondary school, offers an academic program of studies and in keeping with its definition and character maintains a formal dress code for its students. Msgr. Scanlan High School believes that the implementation of a formal dress code contributes to a seriousness of purpose and to a positive learning atmosphere.
The school dress code is designed to help create a better self-image on the part of students and to foster their self-worth and self-esteem. The clearly defined dress code is expected to foster self-discipline and to better prepare students for the demands of the work world they will enter in the not too distant future. Uniforms must fit and be worn properly. Oversized clothing is not acceptable.
Students are to be in compliance with the dress code from the beginning of the school day until its conclusion, as well as during travel to and from school.
The official dress code of the school for the boys requires that they wear properly sized clothing. Oversized clothing is not permitted and will result in a school suspension.
The official dress code of the school for the boys requires they wear:
- Uniform pants (black, navy, khaki) All uniform pants will have M.S. on the pocket.
- Dress shirt (white only) and tie. Shirts must be properly sized and tucked in at all times.
- Uniform sweater or sweater vest
- All shoes must be BLACK. Either a leather dress shoe or Hush Puppies, style Bridgeport in black leather or suede. NO OTHER SHOES WILL BE PERMITTED.
- Hair must be neatly cut and trimmed. Extremes in hairstyles are prohibited. Boys' braids are not permitted. A short haircut is required.
- A well-groomed moustache is permitted. Beards & sideburns are prohibited.
- Summer uniform shirt is optional during the months of September, October, May and June.
- Earrings may not be worn in school. Nose rings/studs on the face or tongue are not permitted.
- Excessive and/or expensive jewelry such as rings, chains, etc. is not permitted.
Other than a moustache, all boys must be clean shaven. Sideburns are not to be worn below the ear lobe. Boys' braids are not permitted. No exceptions!
The official dress code of the school for girls requires that they wear:
- Uniform skirt (no higher than 2 inches above the knee) or Uniform Slacks navy blue or khaki) All uniform slacks will have M.S. on the pocket.
- Uniform blouse (white only)
- Uniform sweater (color appropriate to year)
- All shoes must be BLACK Hush Puppies, style Bridgeport in black leather or suede. NO OTHER SHOES WILL BE PERMITTED.
- Excessive and/or expensive jewelry is not permitted.
- Girls may not wear dangling earrings or hoop earrings of any kind. They may wear one small earring in each ear. Nose rings/studs on the face or tongue are not permitted.
- Summer uniform shirt is optional during the months of September, October, May & June.
- Stockings or tights must be worn at all times. These must be beige, gray, navy, or white. Socks must be white without designs or patterns.
Interpretation of the above items concerning grooming and fashion will be made by the Dean of Students, Section Heads and Faculty. Any violation of these regulations will result in suspension and/or detention. In those cases where there is a noticeable absence of any cooperative spirit, parents will be notified and suspension will be considered.
Specific directives relating to dress code are mailed to the parents during the summer months. These directives are discussed with students at the beginning of the school year. It is advised that expensive coats and jackets not be worn to school.
Please note that the Dress Code is in effect:
- throughout the school building for the entire day.
- on all exam days. (Students may not be permitted to sit for any examination if they are not dressed according to the school’s standards.)
